Press release from Councillor Sylvia Dunn
Beach Cleaning
Councillor Sylvia Dunn, joined forces with volunteers, Seaford Town Councillors, Seaford Lifeguards and the Marine Conservation Society to take part in International Beachwatch Survey at Seaford Bay last weekend (17-18th September). Despite terrible weather, 24 volunteers arrived to take part in the survey and beach clean.  It was estimated that over 40kg of litter, including bottle tops, plastic straps, odd socks, small toys, fishing net, glass and charcoal was cleared from the shingle and responsibly disposed of over the weekend.
Results from the survey will be reported back to the MSC to form part of the national statistics on beach debris. The last international survey showed that over half of the litter collected was plastic which breaks down into small pieces but takes thousands of years to degrade, remaining in the marine environment.
