Haven’t you heard about the voluntary opportunities that are available ?
No ?

What kind of opportunities are there ?
There is a whole host of activities available to you in the voluntary sector throughout Seaford.
. . . and at St. James’ there are opportunities to help with the wide variety of activities and workshops throughout the week.

Drop in and have a chat about what goes on – maybe you are the person we need !
It’s a case of what you want to do !
You could find yourself working with:
people with disabilities
   elderly people
      advice groups
community care groups, including skills training, social activities and hobbies

This all sounds very interesting, but is there anything in it for me ?

Doing voluntary work can:
- help you become aware of new opportunities
- enable you to develop new skills, or brush up on old ones
- relieve the boredom of things like unstimulating paid work, unemployment and retirement
- give you a feeling of satisfaction and be rewarding in itself
- create a new gateway to different careers and training opportunities
- expand your social life, and allow you to meet new people
- you may bring new ideas to us!
   ....the list goes on and
Also, looking ahead . . .

Voluntary work can sometimes lead to new careers in caring professions, administration, community work . . .

If I do voluntary work, will my benefits be affected in any way ?

Unemployment benefit and Income Support
Unpaid work will normally not stop you receiving benefits, or affect the amount you get, provided that you are available for paid work and actively seeking employment.

Invalidity Benefit
If you are in receipt of Invalidity Benefit, you need to tell the DSS that your voluntary work is for therapeutic reasons - a letter from your doctor to the DSS will be sufficient.

At St. James’ we can offer advice to anyone receiving state benefits who wishes to start doing voluntary work. We are here to give advice and information, and hopefully clear any problems that you feel you have before you start your voluntary work.
