The Club was started in 1976 from 3 postcards placed in shop windows in Chyngton Gardens, Alfriston Road and Seaford Town by Kathy Haynes who was the proud possessor of a knitting machine but didn't know of anyone else who had one. The first meeting was set and 25 keen ladies turned up at Kathy's house. It was decided to find a venue that would be large enough to accommodate the ladies and the Downs Leisure Centre was chosen. From the first meeting. new members gradually joined until there were over 60 in number. All were very keen to learn this amazing new craft.
A fashion show was held in 1986, in the interval of a Tea Dance. The Knitting Club was to have shown their various garments for 45 minutes but went on for 1 hour and 15 minutes because of the interest shown by the general public. The garments included day, afternoon and evening wear with a finale of a bride and bridesmaid. We really surprised the public with the good quality of the knitwear.
Different techniques were, and still are shown and demonstrated with the members actively taking part.
The Club also supports many local Charities by knitting up toys, garments etc. for the Charity to sell to boost their funds.
Some of the members also go to different shows held by Nationwide Exhibitions (UK) Ltd to see what is new on the market.
The craft has now slowed down with fewer members, making way for other crafts, but we are still a keen Club and new members of any ability can join the Club at any meeting, where they will be made most welcome. We are also including hand knitters as many of the members still work this craft.
We intend to have a machine at every meeting on which we will demonstrate any technique that the members ask to see.
Periodically we will invite Speakers to visit who may introduce new ideas and fashions in the forms of garments, techniques or knitted samples.
