Seaford in Bloom Awards 2007

The Seaford in Bloom Awards Ceremony 2007 took place at the Community Church Hall, Vale Road Seaford on Friday 17th August, the first time the event has been held there.

Chairman Isabel Stephenson welcomed 100 Seafordians to this new venue and thanked the Rotary Club of Seaford for sponsoring this event, and all the different Seaford societies, clubs and associations who so generously give their support each year.  She then introduced Ashley Stephenson L.V.O who presented an entertaining slide show “Seasonal Gardens”.  Ashley gave a very informative and interesting presentation during which, he amazingly quoted from memory the complicated Latin names of hundreds of plants that would thrive and provide all year round colour and interest in Seaford’s coastal climate.

After the refreshment break, Isabel welcomed the Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Ralph Taylor, and Norman Baker MP. She thanked everyone for their help and support in the three fund raising events held so far this year and expressed her gratitude, on behalf of Seaford in Bloom, to Seaford Town Council and Lewes District Council who continue to support us. There was a wonderful display of Open Gardens this year and Isabel thanked all the owners for their efforts and appealed for some new gardens for next year. She pointed out that after 15 years of Seaford in Bloom, raising the money to provide the displays in the town becomes more difficult each year especially after the extra expense incurred by the drought in 2006. The Committee may have to rethink their strategy in 2008. Isabel thanked the Seaford in Bloom RHS judges Ashley and Philip, for the long hours they spent judging the Floral Competition in July, and also thanked her Committee and their spouses for all the hard work they do for the benefit of Seaford in Bloom and the town.
The Mayor commenced the awards ceremony, and congratulated all the individual prizewinners. Carole Tidy and Patrick McCausland personally presented their donated trophies to the respective winners Len Fisher and Tony Lees. John Price presented the Ivy Price Cup for “high standard of achievement” to sprightly 92 year old Vera Porteous. Norman Baker handed the Jubilee Cup for “best shop window display” to St Wilfrid’s Hospice Shop.  There was a new award this year, the Seaford Lioness Cup for “environmental garden” which went to Mrs J Bunclark. The loudest applause of the evening was reserved for the recipient of the Mayor’s Cup for “outstanding effort to enhance Seaford”. This was collected, on behalf of the East Blatchington Pond Committee, by the pond manager Cedric Trenfield who, together with a small band of willing local helpers, has done so much to create an area of calm and seclusion that attracts a variety of wildlife to the area. Town Clerk, Len Fisher, and his wife Gill scooped several awards, including the prestigious “best overall entry”, on their first participation in the competition.

After the awards the Mayor thanked Seaford in Bloom for inviting him to present the Trophies and also thanked the Committee for all their hard work in providing the colourful baskets and containers that help to make Seaford such a beautiful town.

Isabel closed the evening with a reminder of the next fund raising event “A Quiz Night with Organic Sausage and Mash” to be held at St Leonard’s Hall on Friday 19th October.  Tickets will soon be on sale and teams of four are required.  Details will be posted around the town.
